Niantic, well known for its work on augmented reality games such as Pokémon Go, Ingress, and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, is taking on the Transformers as its next project.
Niantic and developer Very Very Spaceship announced Monday that Transformers: Heavy Metal will be coming to mobile devices later this year.
In Transformers: Heavy Metal, players will join the Guardian Network, an organization that works alongside the Autobots to take on the Decepticons.
In a press statement, Niantic announced that players will explore undiscovered places across Earth in search of resources and fight Decepticons in turn-based warfare.
The first Transformers: Heavy Metal screenshots feature Autobots such as Bumblebee and Decepticons such as Skywarp.
Niantic’s Lightship platform, which enables augmented reality apps to employ real-time 3D mapping and multiplayer social interactions, is used in Transformers: Heavy Metal. Niantic claims that Transformers: Heavy Metal may be played jointly with friends.
